Why Being Good at What You Do is the Most Important Thing

I was talking to one of my favorite clients today as we were finalizing our next shoot. She and her husband own and operate a bagel shop in Richardson, Texas. They had one further north, but decided to move a bit closer into to the city center a few months ago.

I asked her how business has been going in her new location. She told me that it’s been going great, and that they’ve been selling out every single day. She said that she couldn’t really figure out why, that it must just be that they found a a good location.

But, this isn’t a new phenomenon for them, as the same dynamic was occurring when they were in their last location.

Now, what I haven’t mentioned yet is, this is not your ordinary bagel shop. I’m not a connoisseur, but, I can tell you that the bagels my clients make are exceptional. I couldn’t even tell you exactly what it is about them, just that there is something about them that makes you crave more and that make other bagels pale in comparison.

What is also true is that, they obviously really care about what they do and are very good at it. They are in the shop every single day. They make bagels fresh every day. They work hard along side all of their employees. They greet new customers personally, and it’s very apparent that they care about and appreciate them.

I told her that, IMHO, this is why the new shop was doing so well. That she and her husband make an exceptional product, in every sense of the word.

When it comes to running a business, this is what matters. These are the things that people can see and that make one business stand out from the rest. It's the thing that makes people want to come back again and again and that fosters loyalty and trust in your brand or product.

All the marketing in the world, all the followers and likes and bells and whistles won’t ever make up for offering an exceptional product and truly caring about your customers experience.
